In the Old Testament, blood on the door posts was done to identify the relationship the Lord’s people had Vs those who are not his, in order for death to bypass them. Now the New Testament identifies the communion to be used for this same relationship status.
So here is the start of the matter:
This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ for all those [Jew or Gentile] who believe [and trust in Him and acknowledge Him as God’s Son]. There is no distinction, since all have sinned and continually fall short of the glory of God, and are being justified [declared free of the guilt of sin, made acceptable to God, and granted eternal life] as a gift by His [precious, undeserved] grace, through the redemption [the payment for our sin] which is [provided] in Christ Jesus, whom God displayed publicly [before the eyes of the world] as a [life-giving] sacrifice of atonement and reconciliation (propitiation) by His blood [to be received] through faith. There are elements that we have seen in the Old and New Testament: Behind this remembrance is also the relationship between Jesus and Judas which need to be unfolded in Christ’s New Testament remembrance.
Let’s recognize this “Remembrance”as one of Jesus’ unifying strategies for the New Testament church.
Gathering For Remembrance
Paul states: When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. For first of all, when ye come to together in the Church, I hear that there are dissensions among you: and I believe it to be true in some part.
Have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? despise ye the Church of God, and shame them that have not? what shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do ye in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye shall eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye show the Lord’s death till he come. Let every man therefore examine himself, and so let them eat of this bread, and drink of this cup. Watch this – For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh his own damnation, because he discerneth not the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak, and sick among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
Diagnosis: dissension is in the body
Paul explains This cup is the New Testament in Jesus’ blood (in which Judas – his treasurer was about to break fellowship during Passover).
(For this remembrance, Judas is recognized to be an example of not discerning during the Passover feast – he didn’t discern nor judge himself and drank to damnation!)
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

The Communion & Judas’ Betrayal
And the disciples did as Jesus had given them charge, and made ready the Passover. And as they did eat, he said, Verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. So when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me. Then Judas which betrayed him, answered, and said, Is it I, master? He said unto him, Thou hast said it. ¶ And as they did eat, Jesus took the bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. Also he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it them, saying, Drink ye all of it. For this is my blood of the new Testament that is shed for many, for the remission of sins. I say unto you that I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day, when I shall drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
Watch in Lk 19: Jesus’ parable, he spoke to the servants about how to accept the ruler (Jesus) and receive salvation.
Zacchaeus’ conversion with Jesus caused dissension and almost surely Judas and the disciples would have been present as he mentions he was staying at Zacchaeus’ house.
Now when Jesus entered and passed through Jericho, Behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief receiver of the tribute, and he was rich. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, come down at once: for today I must abide at thine house. And when all they saw it, they murmured, saying, that he was gone in to lodge with a sinful man. Then Jesus said to him, This day is salvation come unto this house, forasmuch as he is also become the son of Abraham. For the son of man is come to seek, and to save that which was lost.
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
(Question: As Judas was the group’s treasurer, is it possible that Judas; being a treasurer for Jesus and the disciples heard this and was persuaded to use this method later from this verse?)

Watch how the conversation turned from ignoring the crowd to speaking a parable to them. Christ’s parable of the Talents is to explain the unification strategies of the church, how to occupy and who he is and about his kingdom.
He spoke to those followers regarding his increase of five (by trading – which is another another strategy to occupy)and saw the faithfulness in little gains to make him ruler over much and enter into the Lord’s joy/ to rest in him because he finishes the work.
**As a reminder, this is regarding the dissension in the church Paul spoke of.
And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

Christ is on his way for Passover to Jerusalem. Here we see the prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled and why it is possible that Christ will cry due to receiving this cup in the garden of Gethsemane:

Thus saith thy Lord God, even God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my wrath: thou shalt drink it no more. But I will put it into their hand that spoil thee, which have said to thy soul, Bow down that we may go over, and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the streets to them that went over.

Discern if Christ is with you as you occupy.
How do we occupy? – Parable:
For the kingdom of heaven is as a man (nobleman)that going into a strange country, called his servants, and delivered to them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every man after his own ability, and straightway went from home. Then he that had received the five talents, went and occupied with them, and gained other five talents. Likewise also he that two, he also gained other two. But he that received that one, went and dug it in the earth, and hid his master’s money.

Jesus is the good Shepherd! Taking communion is to be with him and judge yourself as he will judge.

Discernment is necessary for us to use on ourselves as we drink of the New Testament cup and discern the Lord’s will in judging ourselves (are we doing his well or ours, are we sheep or goats?
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. ¶ And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them, and they were troubled, and as they followed, they were afraid, and Jesus took the twelve again, and began to tell them what things should come unto him, ¶ Then James and John the sons of Zebedee came unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us that we desire. And they said to him, Grant unto us, that we may sit, one at thy right hand, and the other at thy left hand in thy glory. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask. Can ye drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and be baptized with the baptism that I shall be baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. But Jesus said unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of the cup that I shall drink of, and be baptized with the baptism wherewith I shall be baptized: But to sit at my right hand and at my left, is not mine to give, but it to them for whom it is prepared. Then shall the king say to them on his right hand, Come ye blessed of my father: take the inheritance of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I thirsted, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in unto you. And the king shall answer, and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me. For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I thirsted, and ye gave me no drink: Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? (Note that – it’s the Same as the servant which buried the talent).
The time of the Passover
And he said, Go ye into the city to such a man, and say to him, The master saith, My time is at hand: I will keep the Passover at thine house with my disciples. ¶ Now on the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the Passover?

As a reminder, the biblical relationship between Leaders and nations as well as God and man is established in reference to drinking of the cup in both the Old and New.
Old Testament – The Genesis Cup
And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand. Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler. And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand: But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them. Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house: And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
Old Testament -The Jeremiah Cup
For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me: Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
Babel hath been as a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken, the nations have drunken of her wine, therefore do the nations rage. Babel is suddenly fallen, and destroyed: howl for her, bring balm for her sore, if she may be healed. We would have cured Babel, but she could not be healed: forsake her, and let us go everyone into his own country: for her judgment is come up into heaven, and is lifted up to the clouds. The Lord hath brought forth our righteousness: come and let us declare in Zion the work of the Lord our God. Old Testament – The Ezekiel Cup
Of the Idolatry of Samaria and Jerusalem, under the names of Oholah and Oholibah.
The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying, Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother. And they committed fornication in Egypt, they committed fornication in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity. And the names of them were Oholah the elder, and Oholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters: thus were their names: Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem Oholibah.
And Oholah played the harlot when she was mine, and she was set on fire with her lovers, to wit, with the Assyrians her neighbors, And when her sister Oholibah saw this, she marred herself with inordinate love more than she, and with her fornications more than her sister with her fornications. Yet she increased her whoredom more, and called to remembrance the days of her youth wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister: therefore will I give her cup into thine hand.
Thus saith the Lord God, Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup, deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision, because it containeth much. Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, even with the cup of destruction, and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. Thou shalt even drink it, and wring it out to the dregs, and thou shalt break the shards thereof, and tear thine own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God.
New Testament: The Matthew Cup
Again he went away the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup cannot pass away from me, but that I must drink it, thy will be done. So he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.
New Testament: The Cup of Blessing
And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
